Kids and video games.
I used to think that the parents who blamed street crime on video games were stupid and just trying to find an excuse.
Now I believe them.
I watched MLM play a Lego video game with his friend today and it was shocking. They abandoned the point of the game and spent 25 minutes beating each other up. When I turned it off, they immediately took to beating each other up in real life, which ended with one of them with a fist in their face. And I thought the game would be fine! The characters were Legos that fell apart when you “killed” them. But I was wrong - these ways we try and go over kids heads about violence by masking it with Lego pieces aren’t successful. They know exactly what they are doing and they relish in it.
It made me think of what Jon Stewart said:
“Maybe we should alway show pictures. Bin Laden, pictures of our wounded service people, pictures of maimed innocent civilians. We can only make decisions about war if we see what war actually is - and not as a video game where bodies quickly disappear leaving behind a shiny gold coin.”
